Houzhen Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Bohai Bay region. The naming section is located in wells at Houzhen Township of Shouguang County and Changyi County, Shandong. Named by Li Jingrong et al. in 1989.
Lithology and Thickness
Sequence of lacustrine deposits above the Late Cretaceous Wangshi Gr and below the conglomerate bed in the central part of the Second Member of the Kongdian Fm. Lower part is dark purple, grayish green and dark gray basalt with gray and purplish red mudstone and carbonaceous mudstone. Upper part consists of gray and brownish gray mudstone with sandstone, siltstone or carbonaceous shale. The wells have a thickness of 1015 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable contact with the underlying Cretaceous (Wangshi Gr; Jingangkou Fm).
Upper contact
It has a conformable or disconformable contact with the overlying Eocene Kongdian Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is mainly distributed at Changyi, Weixian and Shouguang, Shandong.

Fossils
The upper part of this formation contains abundant sporopollen, which is characterized by dominance of the pollen of Porosa, especially Triporopollentites, associated with Betula, Juglans, Myrcea and Ulmus with catkin, of which Paraalnipollenites with a peculiar shape is well developed and there is significant quantity of pollen of ancient angiosperms such as Aquilapollenites. These species are often found in the Paleocene in the Pacific region of the northern hemisphere.
